What type of samples are required?
DNA can be obtained from almost any human tissue. A mouth swab can provide a sample or a venous blood sample is commonly used. If prenatal testing is to be performed, a specialist Dr is required.
Is the sample collection painful?
No, if a non-invasive mouth swab is taken. There may be some mild discomfort when more invasive sampling procedures are required, such as venous blood, or prenatal sampling (amniotic fluid or chorionic villus).
Is the DNA test 100% accurate?
No diagnostic test can be 100% accurate. The accuracy of the test will depend upon whether we are testing for a specific mutation or a genetic screening test (such as for cystic fibrosis, where not all mutations can be tested). It will also depend on the particular type of laboratory technique used. We can provide more specific risk of misdiagnosis to your doctor.
How long does the testing take?
From receipt of all samples, results are usually reported within 3 - 10 days.
What if someone is overseas or interstate?
No problem. We have a network of collection centres both Australia- wide and internationally, and transport collection materials to and from our Sydney laboratory daily.
Can I take the samples myself at home?
Samples should be collected in a controlled environment, by a doctor or pathology collector, to ensure the samples are collected and labelled appropriately.
Does Medicare or private health insurance in Australia cover the cost of the DNA test?
Only 2 DNA tests are currently covered by Medicare (see test times and prices). Any other DNA test must be paid by the client.
Will you destroy my DNA once testing is complete?
No, we would normally keep your DNA for quality purposes and in the event, you or your doctor, request that it be tested again. WE DO NOT test your DNA, or allow it to be tested, for anything other than what has been requested.
