Prenatal Testing

Most prenatal tests are performed on women 35 years and older as the risk for a chromosomally abnormal pregnancy increases with the mother's age. This is related to the age of a woman’s eggs, which were already completely formed during the fetal period before she was born herself and, if she gets pregnant later in life, there is a greater chance of chromosome errors happening while an egg matures and awaits fertilisation.

The chromosomes of your baby can be tested by:

  • Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS): a sample of the placenta (from 11- 13 weeks gestation).

  • Amniocentesis: a sample of the fluid surrounding the baby (from 15- 19 weeks gestation).

Only a qualified practitioner can collect these samples.
